  7. Thanks for downloading WATCH!  Here's a few brief word of explanation.

  10. a) What does WATCH do?
  11.

  13.     WATCH is a program that monitors the actions of other programs - what 
  14. files they are reading, writing, anything they happening to be doing on your 
  15. system, WATCH records the details on disk, for you to view later. 
  16.  
  17.     WATCH is a DOS program, but works with 16-bit Windows, too- it can 
  18. tell you which DLL's a program is loading, and in which order, for example.

  21. b) Why might this be useful?
  22.            
  23.        
  24.        - General fault diagnoses 
  25.      (why DOES this program keep crashing ?) 
  26.  
  27.        - Finding out which files are accessed and/ or modified 
  28.      by installation programs. 
  29.  
  30.        - Optimising your system - finding out just WHY some programs
  31.      take SO long to load.
  32.  
  33.        - Simple curiosity. Seeing what Windows does when it loads 
  34.      can be quite interesting ...

  37. c) What comes in the package?
  38.

  40.     - WATCH.EXE is the full Watch program, which produces the most
  41.       complete reports.
  42.  
  43.     - MINWATCH.EXE is a 'minimum' version of Watch, producing reports
  44.       which are smaller and easier to understand, but possibly might
  45.       leave out something important.

  47.     - README.TXT is this file, containing brief documentation.

  50. c) How do I use WATCH?
  51.

  53.    1. For simplicity, copy WATCH and all associated files into their own 
  54.       directory.
  55.  
  56.    2. If you are running Windows, close it down. WATCH will only record the
  57.       actions of Windows programs if it is run FIRST.
  58.  
  59.    3. Change to the WATCH directory. For the simpler, minimal report, run
  60.       MINWATCH.EXE - for the full result, run WATCH.EXE.
  61.  
  62.       Whichever you choose, will now start recording what is happening on
  63.       your system. This data will be stored in a file called REPORT, in the 
  64.       WATCH directory.
  65.  
  66.    4. Run the program you wish to monitor.
  67.  
  68.    5. Perform the actions in your program that you want to monitor. Be as 
  69.       brief as possible in doing this, to keep the final report size low.
  70.  
  71.    6. As soon as you can, exit and close down your program.  
  72.       Close Windows down, if you are using it.
  73.  
  74.    7. At the DOS prompt, change to the WATCH directory, hold down the 
  75.       Ctrl and left shift keys, and press the "U" key, to uninstall 
  76.       the program.

  78.    8. Reboot your system.  Use Windows Write, or your favourite word 
  79.       processor, to look at the REPORT file stored in the WATCH directory.

  82. d) How much does WATCH cost?
  83.

  85.     WATCH is released into the world as a "donationware" package. 
  86. This is like shareware, but without any obligation to register after some
  87. period of time - the choice is yours.  You may use, copy and distribute 
  88. WATCH (as long as you distribute WATCH.TXT with it) for as long as it is  
  89. useful to you. 
  90.        
  91.     However, should you feel at any point that the program has saved 
  92. you time or money, and you would like to register, then this costs $10, 
  93. for which you will receive additional WATCH support programs and 
  94. documentation, by e-mail, and priority over unregistered users on support
  95. questions.
