-
-
- Thanks for downloading WATCH! Here's a few brief word of explanation.
-
-
- a) What does WATCH do?
-
-
- WATCH is a program that monitors the actions of other programs - what
- files they are reading, writing, anything they happening to be doing on your
- system, WATCH records the details on disk, for you to view later.
-
- WATCH is a DOS program, but works with 16-bit Windows, too- it can
- tell you which DLL's a program is loading, and in which order, for example.
-
-
- b) Why might this be useful?
-
-
- - General fault diagnoses
- (why DOES this program keep crashing ?)
-
- - Finding out which files are accessed and/ or modified
- by installation programs.
-
- - Optimising your system - finding out just WHY some programs
- take SO long to load.
-
- - Simple curiosity. Seeing what Windows does when it loads
- can be quite interesting ...
-
-
- c) What comes in the package?
-
-
- - WATCH.EXE is the full Watch program, which produces the most
- complete reports.
-
- - MINWATCH.EXE is a 'minimum' version of Watch, producing reports
- which are smaller and easier to understand, but possibly might
- leave out something important.
-
- - README.TXT is this file, containing brief documentation.
-
-
- c) How do I use WATCH?
-
-
- 1. For simplicity, copy WATCH and all associated files into their own
- directory.
-
- 2. If you are running Windows, close it down. WATCH will only record the
- actions of Windows programs if it is run FIRST.
-
- 3. Change to the WATCH directory. For the simpler, minimal report, run
- MINWATCH.EXE - for the full result, run WATCH.EXE.
-
- Whichever you choose, will now start recording what is happening on
- your system. This data will be stored in a file called REPORT, in the
- WATCH directory.
-
- 4. Run the program you wish to monitor.
-
- 5. Perform the actions in your program that you want to monitor. Be as
- brief as possible in doing this, to keep the final report size low.
-
- 6. As soon as you can, exit and close down your program.
- Close Windows down, if you are using it.
-
- 7. At the DOS prompt, change to the WATCH directory, hold down the
- Ctrl and left shift keys, and press the "U" key, to uninstall
- the program.
-
- 8. Reboot your system. Use Windows Write, or your favourite word
- processor, to look at the REPORT file stored in the WATCH directory.
-
-
- d) How much does WATCH cost?
-
-
- WATCH is released into the world as a "donationware" package.
- This is like shareware, but without any obligation to register after some
- period of time - the choice is yours. You may use, copy and distribute
- WATCH (as long as you distribute WATCH.TXT with it) for as long as it is
- useful to you.
-
- However, should you feel at any point that the program has saved
- you time or money, and you would like to register, then this costs $10,
- for which you will receive additional WATCH support programs and
- documentation, by e-mail, and priority over unregistered users on support
- questions.
-
- There are two ways to register. The quick and easy way;
-
- GO SWREG on Compuserve, quoting registration ID 12507.
-
- The slow and tricky way; send $10 (or your local equivalent)
- by *registered* post to:
-
- Mike Williams
- 36 Laithwaite Close
- LEICESTER
- LE4 1BX
- ENGLAND
-
- Don't forget to include an e-mail address so I can send you
- your additional programs.
-
-
- e) I have more questions! What can I do?
-
-
- You can write to me at the above address, or e-mail me:
-
- Compuserve address: 101540,1551
-
- Internet address : 101540.1551@compuserve.com
-
- Please note that, while I will try to help, there are limits to
- the amount of time I can spend supporting this. I will try to reply to
- everyone, but it may not be possible to do this immediately.
-
- Finally, thank you for trying out WATCH, and I hope it proves
- to be as useful to you, as it has been to me. Good luck!
